SmartFox is PractiTest’s built-in AI assistant designed to help you save valuable time and simplify the manual test creation process, which is often one of the most labor-intensive parts of test management. SmartFox helps reduce the manual effort by providing intelligent, AI-generated test steps, based on the test data.
Note: In order to use the SmartFox, please ensure that your account owner has accepted the beta terms of use and enabled this feature in the account settings.
Generating New Test Steps
If your test does not yet contain any steps and you’d like to quickly generate relevant ones, start by giving your test a clear name and a comprehensive description. Based on this input, SmartFox will generate well-defined and relevant steps.
How to Use
- Fill in the Title and Description fields of your test.
- Navigate to the Steps tab.
- Click the ‘Step Generator’ button.
A pop-up window will appear, showing that SmartFox is working on generating steps. Within a few moments, SmartFox will begin presenting multiple-step suggestions, one by one, for your review.
Once SmartFox have done generating steps, you’ll see the full list of steps on the screen. To add them to your tests, please click ‘Apply Steps‘ at the bottom right corner.
After clicking the ‘Apply Steps’ button, you’ll return to the test where the selected steps will be added. Please make sure to click the Save button to save the steps.
Refining SmartFox Generated Steps
Once SmartFox has generated your initial test steps, you can fine-tune them to better suit your needs.At the bottom of the pop-up window, you’ll find a text box where you can enter instructions for how you’d like SmartFox to improve the steps. This is especially useful if you want the steps to be more concise or detailed. Some examples can be: “Shorten the steps”, “Elaborate the steps with more context”, or “Add more steps”.
Once you’ve entered your instructions, SmartFox will regenerate the steps based on your input.If you’ve made multiple refinements and want to return to a previous version or explore alternative suggestions, use the arrow buttons to navigate between different sets of results.
Using the Step Generator with Existing Steps
You can also use SmartFox’s Step Generator to refine and improve tests that already have defined steps.
- Open a test that has existing steps.
- Click the Step Generator button.
- The SmartFox Step Generator screen will open, displaying the current steps.
- Click the arrow next to the Apply Steps button to open two action options:
- Replace Steps – SmartFox will generate a completely new set of steps, replacing your existing ones.
- Add as New Steps – SmartFox will generate additional steps and append them after your existing steps.
Once you’ve selected your preferred option, the new steps will appear in the test.
Click Save to finalize and apply the changes.
Text Enhance
The Text Enhance capability, powered by SmartFox AI, helps you instantly refine, shorten, or elaborate text within your test fields. This feature is available for the following fields:
- Description
- Preconditions
- Step Description
- Expected Results
How It Works
Next to each supported field, you’ll see an “Enhance with AI” icon. Clicking this icon opens an inline suggestion panel displaying AI-generated improvements for your text.
You can choose one of the following enhancement options:
- Refine Text – Rephrases the text for better clarity and flow.
- Shorten – Shorten the text while keeping its meaning.
- Elaborate – Expands the text with more context or detail.
Reviewing and Applying Suggestions
Once the AI suggestions are generated, you have the ability to select whether to apply it or not. In any case, the new AI suggestions are not applied automatically. After reviewing the suggestions, you can:
- Accept Changes – Apply the AI suggestion. You can then choose to either:
- Insert – Add the new text alongside the existing one.
- Replace – Overwrite the existing text with the enhanced version.
- Reject Changes – Keep the original text with no modifications.
Interactive Refinement
After the initial AI enhancement, you can further refine the generated text by providing additional feedback.
This includes:
- Input Text + Send Button – Type specific instructions for SmartFox (e.g., “make it more concise” or “add an example”) and click the Send button to generate a refined version.
- Back and Forth Buttons – Navigate between previous and next enhancement versions to review and compare different outputs.
